Weekend Activity - "Between Earth and Heaven" opening today at the Hammer

"Between Earth and Heaven," opening today at the Hammer Museum, traces architect John Lautner's lifelong quest to transcend the boundaries between shelter and nature. It also attempts to redefine the legacy of a seminal architectural pioneer so profoundly misunderstood that it took the exhibition's co-curator, Nicholas Olsberg, three months to decide whether to get involved at all.

Lautner did aim for altitude. One day in 1963, he walked out onto a Bel-Air cliff-top construction site and stood so perilously close to the edge that he was in danger of falling prey to a stray gust, to gravity itself. Yet he was calm, meditating on skyline and cityscape, like a stone angel on the parapet of a European opera house reaching for the gods. He seemed to embody his contention that "the purpose of architecture is to create timeless, free, joyous spaces for all activities in life."

Bel~Air Mobile Phone Service - A Dead Zone?

I have been hearing a lot of complaints from Bel~Air residents that mobile phone service will not reach their homes. Although I am a notable exception (one of my only neighbors is a polite AT&T cell tower), my research indicates that although surrounded by towers, Bel~Air lacks an internal network that would allow for satisfactory reception. indicates the following number towers and antennas surround our Bel~Air Association Headquarters at 100 Bel~Air Road in a 3-mile Radius:

Therefore, without internal towers, reception for the majority of Bel~Air will remain spotty at best.

Break-out the Ear Plugs - Construction on UCLA's Spieker Aquatic Center Begins

With the erection of the construction trailer this morning - UCLA's Spieker Aquatic Center construction project has officially begun.

The project involves the construction of a competition swimming pool and related facilities at the Sunset Canyon Recreation Center (SCRC) in the northwest zone of the campus (i.e., just Southeast of Bel~Air's West Gate along Sunset Blvd.) The Spieker Aquatic Center is designed to support the swimming, water polo and diving programs of the Departments of Intercollegiate Athletics and Cultural and Recreational Affairs, and will meet the design standards governing competitive collegiate aquatic sports. Project components include a new 52-meter deep-water pool, an approximately 6,000 square foot support facility to provide lockers, showers and related uses, a dive tower, lighting, scoreboard, space to accommodate temporary spectator seating for events, and landscape elements.

In speaking to UCLA's project manager this morning - Ron Enholm (310) 206-3127 - he indicates that project construction should last about one year.
