Update on August Ramp Demolitions

Email masthead image

Before we update you on the progress made during the first two weeks of reconstruction of the northbound I-405 off-ramp to Sunset Bl, we want to remind you of the demolition of the I-405 northbound on-ramp from eastbound Wilshire Bl, scheduled for tonight, Thursday, August 22.

Northbound On-Ramp from Eastbound Wilshire Bl

To ease traffic during the 90-day closure, 24 traffic control officers (TCOs) and six TCO Strike Teams will be available for the Wilshire and Sunset closures.

In addition, the eastbound Wilshire 4 lane will be reconfigured to a dedicated right turn pocket. The right-turn pocket on southbound Sepulveda Bl to Santa Monica Bl has been extended. The westbound Santa Monica 3 lane will be modified from a dedicated through lane to a shared through/right-turn lane.

More information describing the 90-day closure and available detours can be found on the I-405 Sepulveda Pass Improvements project website.

The northbound ramp and its abutments (end supports) have been demolished. Construction of the new bridge abutments has begun, preceded with excavation and pile driving for their foundations. Workers completed these tasks ahead of schedule.

Through the remainder of August, we will continue to erect formwork (false work) for upcoming concrete pours for the bridge’s support columns (bents). Once concrete is poured and cured in October and November, the third bent—now rising in the middle of Sepulveda Bl—will be removed with the remainder of the bridge false work.

The 120-day closure will also see construction of a large retaining wall that runs along the east side of the ramp. Thus far, the pre-existing wall has been demolished. Excavation and pile driving for the wall’s foundation continues. We plan to finish the entire wall by the end of September 2013.
